It’s that time of the year: the late spring when it’s always sunny for Zillah’s Community Days.

This year’s edition kicks off with the Miss Zillah pageant on May 7 at Zilliah Intermediate School. The doors will open at 6 p.m., and the pageant activities will start at 7 p.m. This year there are five girls who’ll be seeking one of the three crowns. Joining me as this year’s group of contestants are freshman Christy Molina, sophomore Victoria Demaray-Newman, sophomore Angelica Perez, and junior Abbigail Shelton. The contestants will be dancing, performing talent segments, walking in evening gowns with poise, and answering impromptu questions with our best confidence. Admission is $6. (And we all hope you come to watch as we perform in front of our community!)

Later in the week, May 10, the carnival will open and, following that, a talent show will commence at 7 p.m. by the Zillah Civic Center.

On May 11, the day kicks off with a breakfast at Stewart Park from 6 to 10 a.m. provided by the Lions Club. Cost of the breakfast is $7.

Also happening that morning: A fun run starting at the corner of First Avenue and Seventh Street. Registration for the 8 a.m. run opens at 6:30 a.m. and costs $20, which includes a T-shirt. Participants may choose from 1-mile, 5K or 10K routes.

Later that morning is the parade at 11 a.m., with the route from the Cherry Patch drugstore down First Avenue to Stadelman’s fruit warehouse. After the parade is over, the carnival reopens, and people can start walking around town. There will be a dunk tank fundraiser from 1 to 3 p.m. involving Zillah’s mayor, Dr. Scott Carmack, and other community leaders. Attendees can also take in live entertainment provided at Stewart Park from 1 to 9 p.m. near the carnival area.

The long, delightful day ends with the fireworks show at 9 p.m. that can be watched from Stewart Park.

Every year, Zillah Community Days is such a blast, and it’s wonderful when the whole town comes together, along with the other communities. It’s also a time for royalty to get to know each other and to join every single other participant in the parade.

Wish us all luck on our May 7 pageant, and we hope to see you all soon for Zillah Community Days!
