ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Central Washington's All-American distance runner Alexa Shindruk was named the GNAC's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.

Shindruk, a senior from Lynden who is CWU's third recipient of the award since 2002, earned first-team All-American honors in cross country and outdoor track and field and second-team recognition during the indoor track season. She also received numerous academic honors with her 4.00 cumulative grade-point average in accounting.

In her final season this spring, Shindruk placed seventh in the 5,000 and 10,000 at the NCAA Division II National Championships. She holds school records in both events at 16:47.08 (5,000) and 34:25.41 (10,000).

CWU's Forrester drafted

ELLENSBURG — Jacob Forrester, a senior reliever for Central Washington this spring, was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 37th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Wednesday.

Forrester recorded five saves this season, appearing in 15 games with 36 strikeouts over 18.1 innings. Opposing hitters batted .148 against the right-hander.

Forrester is the sixth CWU player to be drafted following Billy North (1969), Dave Heaverlo (1972 and 1973), Brandon Rohde (2012), and CJ Gettman (2016).


Pak takes two

KENNEWICK — With a six-run outburst in the top of the ninth inning, the Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak closed out a 7-6, 13-10 sweep over Southridge in a nonleague doubleheader late Tuesday night.

Dylan Bishop was 3 for 4 in the opener with a double, triple and three runs scored, and Wyatt Berriman had three RBI in the nightcap.

The Pak (3-1) host Bellingham for a single game Friday night and then host its annual Hagert tournament over the weekend.

Beetles, Hanford split

RICHLAND — Jared Sires was 2 for 3 with three RBI and Jayden Martinez drove in two runs to spark the Yakima Pepsi Beetles to a 10-4 win over the Hanford Flames in the second game of a Central Washington League doubleheader Wednesday night.

John McDonald was the starter in the nightcap, which saw the Beetles break out for six runs in the fourth inning. The game was rained out in the bottom of the fifth.

Hanford won the first game 9-0.

The Beetles open play in the Hagert tournament on Saturday against Mt. Spokane at noon.
