YAKIMA, Wash. -- A disappointing third quarter kept Zillah’s accomplished senior class from the ending it wanted Saturday morning at the SunDome.
The Leopards still finished sixth in Class 1A after a 50-36 loss to Lakeside, capping off their fourth straight state tournament trip with a second trophy. Senior forward Samantha Bowman posted team-highs of 13 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Callie Delp scored 12 points.
Those two led the way most of the season as Zillah started 22-0 before stumbling twice in the district championship and at regionals. Wins over Cle Elum and Nooksack Valley at the SunDome earned the Leopards a chance to play on Saturday.
Zillah kept up with No. 7 Lakeside for a half, despite shooting less than 30 percent from the field. Lakeside evaded defensive pressure to keep the No. 4 Leopards from finding easy baskets as they got even colder after halftime.
They scored just three points in the third quarter, allowing Lakeside to open up a 10-point lead. Kendra Gay posted a double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds for the Eagles.
As usual, Kaia John and Abbie Myers joined their fellow seniors to make up four-fifths of the starting lineup, with all but John making the SCAC West first team. Bowman earned MVP honors for providing a dominant inside presence on both sides of the court for Zillah, which finished 24-4.
John earned second team honors and generally defended the opponent’s best player, while yet another senior, Lauren Ziegler, started early in the season and continued to play a key role off the bench. Bowman will play at Central Washington next season and Myers plans to play somewhere as well, so it’s no wonder coach Brandie Valadez spoke in glowing terms when describing what the seniors meant to the program.
“Our heart and soul,” Valadez said. “We’re going to miss a huge chunk out of it next year. It’s going to be time for a lot of rebuilding.”
