Chelan plays Zillah in the Class 1A state volleyball tournament on Friday, Nov. 15, 2019 at Yakima SunDome in Yakima, Wash.

YAKIMA, Wash. —After everything Chelan went through just to reach the fifth set of Saturday's 1A volleyball championship, surviving one match point felt well within reach.

The Mountain Goats emphasized believing in themselves and sticking to their tried-and-true approach, a much more difficult task after giving up eight straight points to put No. 2 King's three points away from a sweep. But No. 1 Chelan found an answer just in time, then bounced back again at the last possible moment to pull out a 25-27, 16-25, 25-22, 25-21, 17-15 win at the Yakima SunDome.

"We knew that we had done everything we possible could to get to this point and that whatever happened happened and we were just going to play our game," senior setter Leanna Garfoot said. "If that was enough then this was right and this was meant to happen, so it was just free."

They did just enough to thwart the efforts of King's senior and Grand Canyon beach volleyball signee Alli Hanson, who delivered kills on six of eight points to put the Knights ahead 22-21 in the third. Chelan scored the next four, capped off by two kills from junior Elly Collins, who also ended the match with two more kills on assists from Garfoot.

The senior setter trusted her instincts to find the right teammate, knowing nearly everyone on the court can contribute. Cal Poly beach volleyball signee Emma McLaren came up with quite a few critical kills, including some from the back line, where she teamed with fellow senior Casey Simpson to lead an resilient defense.

Saturday began with a different five-set match, this one featuring a Goldendale team that eked out a 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 24-26, 15-11 win to earn a trophy. Sara Hiebert ended the day with a team-high 44 kills after Goldendale lost to King's Way Christian 25-20, 25-20, 25-21 to finish eighth.
