TACOMA — Prosser's impressive turnaround finally came to a halt Friday night at Mt. Tahoma Stadium.
The No. 7 seed Mustangs couldn't keep up with the speed and athleticism of No. 2 Steilacoom in a 48-15 loss, snapping an eight-game win streak. Prosser started the season with a pair of losses to 4A teams before rolling through the CWAC for its second straight league title.
Five turnovers kept Prosser's offense from building any sort of momentum, especially when De'Andre Means returned an interception 47 yards to put the Mustangs behind 21-0. Jake Jensen picked off a pass for Prosser and Anthony Kernan caught a 21-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing drive.
But the Mustangs couldn't stop running back Rasun Williams, who rushed for nearly 200 yards and a touchdown. Diego Chavez scored a late touchdown for Prosser and Kaiden Rivera found Kaden Swift for the two-point conversion.
That combination will return next season, but the Mustangs will also lose some key players such as Kernan, Chavez, Will Thompson and Logan Candonoza to graduation. Senior captain and middle linebacker Jake Coleman will also graduate after missing the second half of the season to injury.
Steilacoom earned a semifinal matchup next week against either No. 3 Lynden or No. 11 Washougal.
