BURBANK — Andrez Zavala’s second touchdown pass of the game, this one to Giovanni Trujillo early in the fourth quarter, broke a tie, and Mabton stopped a two-point conversion attempt with about two minutes remaining to upset ninth-ranked Burbank 21-20 and earn a Class 2B state playoff berth.

Zavala also threw first-quarter scoring pass to Armando Morales, David Torres returned a punt for a score, and Morales made all three point-after kicks to help the Vikings (4-6) surprise the Coyotes in the winner-to-state, loser-out contest.

Burbank (8-2) dominated statistically, outgaining Mabton 322 to 194, including 315 to 26 on the ground, but the Vikings managed to stay close by forcing two turnovers and getting the big special-teams play from Torres, who covered 44 yards with his second-quarter punt return that tied the game at 14-all.

Zavala was 9 of 20 for 168 yards, with his scoring passes covering 39 yards to Morales and 21 yards to Trujillo. Morales had three catches for 105 yards.

Trailing 21-14, Burbank’s Creed Pariera scored on an 8-yard run with 2 minutes to play but the two-point conversion was stopped — Mabton’s second such stop of the game as Burbank went for two after all three of its scores.

Abraham Garcia led Burbank with 174 rushing yards, including a 23-yard TD run, and Pariera added 143 more.
