Ellensburg 27, East Valley 14

ELLENSBURG — For a team eager for an offensive breakout, Brenden Swanson proved to be the ideal triggerman for the Bulldogs.

Swanson returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, sparking a 21-point first quarter, and Dion Hardeman added two rushing touchdowns in the first half for Ellensburg, which hadn’t topped 18 points in the first four games of the season.

The Bulldogs’ fast start was pivotal as East Valley scored the only touchdown of the second half, an Aiden Estill 20-yard scoring strike to Erik Navarro that pulled the Red Devils within 27-14 with 2:32 left in the third period.

Ellensburg leaned on its special teams at the start and its defense at the end. After Swanson’s big kick return, Hardeman blocked a punt and Wyatt Nelson recovered the ball in the end zone for a 14-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.

Swanson finished with 65 yards rushing on 11 carries and he caught two passes for 79 yards.

Estill finished 18 of 34 for 213 yards with Navarro hauling in 10 passes for 118 yards.
