YAKIMA, Wash. -- The Yakima Valley Pippins signed two freshmen this week from the University of Oregon for its upcoming season this summer.

Coach Marcus McKimmy announced commitments from catcher-outfielder James Bell and right-handed pitcher Tyler Frazier, who both prepped in California.

Bell, at 6-foot, 203 pounds, was a first-team All-State pick as a senior at Clovis North High School in Fresno. Last summer he played for the Medford Rogues of the Great West League and batted .333.

The 6-1, 143-pound Frazier posted a 7–4 record with a 2.08 ERA as a senior at Santiago High School in Corona.

The Pippins open their sixth West Coast League season on June 4 in Clark County to take on the expansion Ridgefield Raptors. The home opener is set for June 7.

COLLEGES

YVC games postponed

While unplayable field conditions and lack of outdoor practice time has significally slowed the start of high school spring sports, it’s been tough for Yakima Valley College athletics as well.

While the baseball team has played 13 games — all on the west side — it has yet to play on its home field and it won’t happen this weekend after doubleheaders with Everett and Edmonds at Parker Faller Field were canceled on Wednesday. Since the games on Saturday and Sunday were nonleague contests they will not be rescheduled.

YVC’s softball team hasn’t played any games yet and its NWAC East Region home games scheduled for Friday and Saturday have been postponed. Since these games against Treasure Valley and Blue Mountain are conference games they will be rescheduled but no dates have been set yet.
