Natalie Wright scored off an assist from Makayla Higbee in the 73rd minute to break a tie and lead Yakima Valley College to a 3-2 victory over Wenatchee Valley in an NWAC East Region soccer match Saturday at YVC.

Maddie Hoffman scored twice in the first half to help the Yaks forge a 2-2 tie at the break.

With the victory and a loss by Columbia Basin, YVC (5-1-1 region, 9-2-1 overall) moved into second place in the region, trailing only Walla Walla (7-0-0).

CWU blanks Saints

ELLENSBURG — Madison Bradley scored in the first half and Peyton Vogel added a late insurance goal to lead Central Washington to a 2-0 victory over Saint Martin’s in a GNAC women’s soccer match Saturday at the CWU soccer complex.

Emily Thompson made just one save to earn the shutout, while Olivia Sloan and Sydney Lowe recorded assists for the Wildcats (2-1 GNAC, 4-4 overall).

First half: 1, CWU, Madison Bradley (Olivia Sloan), 28:52.

Second half: 2, CWU, Peyton Vogel (Sydney Lowe), 80:20.

Central falls in five

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Four players reached double digits in kills, led by Makala Swart’s 15, but Central Washington wasn’t able to finish off Alaska Fairbanks, which won the final two sets to top the Wildcats in a GNAC volleyball match Saturday.

UAF, which had 14 blocks, ended up winning 25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-9.

“We did a nice job overcoming some adversity throughout the match, but too many errors cost us at the end,” Central coach Mario Andaya said in a release from the school.

In addition to Swart, Julia Mellander and Diana Fa’amausili had 11 kills each, and Bridgette Webb finished with 10 for the Wildcats, who dropped to 3-3 in the conference and 8-6 overall after losing both matches on its Alaska trip this week.

YVC sweeps Wenatchee

WENATCHEE — Yakima Valley swept past Wenatchee Valley in an NWAC East Region match Friday night.

YVC (2-4 region, 6-19 overall) won 25-20, 25-17, 25-22.

CWU women second

UNIVERSITY PLACE — Lily Tyrrell was eighth and Molly Mattson 10th to help Central Washington’s women finish second in the John Payne Invitational on Saturday.

Tyrrell covered the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 22.00 seconds, while Mattson clocked 18:25.30.

Central’s men finished fourth, topped by Trevor Allen, who placed 12th. He had a time of 25:39.6 on the 8,000-meter layout.
