To the editor — In the Sept. 5 edition, you wrote about school safety ("Yakima Council wants action on missing sidewalks near elementary schools"). When I went to school, they taught us to walk facing the traffic and to wear light colors so we could be seen better.
They taught us to ride bicycles with the traffic, not opposing it.
Now, I see many pedestrians walking with their backs to the traffic.
I see probably half the bicycle riders on streets without helmets and about 10% of them riding against traffic.
The city spent over $100,000 on a consultant and city staff to get bicycle lane information. What happened?
