FILE — Attorney General William Barr speaks as he stands with President Donald Trump and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross during an event about the census in the Rose Garden at the White House in Washington, Thursday, July 11, 2019.

To the editor — The census is supposed to be an honest counting of all souls in the United States. Not just voters, not just citizens, not just white Republicans. President Donald Trump continues to seek to pervert the census to obtain a racist result.

The Constitution says count everyone. Counting potential voters was never the goal.

Why count everyone? To allocate representatives to states, based on how many folks they need to take care of. Highways for the total number of cars, not just Republican cars. Undercounting cuts off federal money and representation, which is Trump’s intent. We have to make sure everyone gets counted.

Trump has two goals with his lies: validate his white supremacist followers, and scare brown folks away from participating in the census, because they legitimately fear Trump will try to use confidential census data against them, even though that’s illegal. Because Trump doesn’t care what the law or Constitution says. He demonizes Mexicans, Muslims, blacks and Jews, and excuses the violence he has fomented rather than taking any responsibility.

Neither Trump nor Wilbur Ross nor Stephen Miller have suffered any consequence for their racist census plots to subvert the Constitution.
