NerdWallet Student Loan Cost

FILE — In this June 20, 2019, photo a student works in the library at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. Those who graduate college with student loans owe close to $30,000 on average, according to the most recent data from the Institute for College Access & Success.

To the editor — Why is there so much student loan debt? Obviously, people aren’t paying their bills! I don’t understand where people get the idea that they don’t have to pay back their contractually obligated loans that they applied for and signed, under no duress. Who is teaching students that it’s OK not to be accountable and that somebody else will take on their debt?

Part of growing up is becoming a well-rounded, responsible, ethical and accountable adult. If you can’t pay off a loan, don’t apply for it.
