To the editor — I thought religious letters would only appear on the religion pages, but the Aug. 6 opinion page has a doozy ("Only God's plan will succeed," Jesse Torres). I find such sentiments silly or worse.

Another letter urges readers to reject socialism, but gives no specifics ("Just say no to socialism in all its forms," Matt Hubbell, Aug. 5). If the writer is suggesting a purely capitalist society, that would be a very cruel world.

Fortunately, pure capitalism has never existed. Socialism is a balance of human values against dehumanizing capitalism. Extremes of socialism or capitalism can both result in revolution.
