Rochelle "Shelly" (L'Allier) Smith

Brookside Funeral Home & Crematory

Rochelle “Shelly” Ann (L’Allier) Smith, 65, of Union Gap ran pain free into the arms of Jesus on the morning of October 29, 2019. She was born on December 12, 1953 in Centerville, MN to Albert and Delia L’Allier. After her mother’s passing, she was raised by her father and step mother, Hildur L’Allier.

Shelly was always very active with different activities. During her elementary school years she was in gymnastics. Her focus was on the balance beam and uneven bars. She was very petite and this gained her the nickname of “Peanut.”

She moved to the Yakima Valley to live with her Uncle Bill and Aunt Eileen Wardell at the age of 15 where she attended/graduated from A.C. Davis High School in 1971. During her high school years, she participated in the marching band playing the alto saxophone. She then attended YVCC’s business school and later obtained her cosmetology license. She went on to manage the Regis salon in the Downtown Yakima Mall. She then moved to Sunshine Answering Service followed by Cascade Security Systems & Answering Systems. She stayed home for a few years following the birth of her 3rd daughter. Shelly then returned to the work field as the office manager for Arnold Artificial Limb, Inc. where she worked for 25 years before retiring.

Shelly’s faith was extremely important to her. She served faithfully while attending First Baptist Church of Union Gap for 32 years. Her service included teaching Sunday School, Youth Group, Children’s Church, and Discipleship Training, as well as serving as Church Hostess. She was also highly involved in community activities, such as Campfire and Community Dramas with the SonShine Singers. She was always there to support her family in every sporting event, music performance, drama, and school activity. She loved to create fun holiday activities to do with her family, especially her grandkids. She also enjoyed vacationing with her family when camping, traveling to Disneyland, and her favorite, going to the beach in Seaside, Oregon. Her life was full of activities that were always centered around her family.

She married Gary L. Smith on April 6, 1973 in White Bear Lake, MN. A reception followed in the Yakima Valley for their Washington family.

Shelly was the youngest of 5 children; Ralph (Louise) L’Allier, Leon (Jackie) L’Allier, Claudette Meyer, Yvonne (Ron) Taylor, and later gained 2 step siblings, John (Gracie) Bucklen & Ruth Pavich. Shelly had a very special relationship with her sisters; they were often referred to as the Ding-A-Ling Sisters.

She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Gary Smith; her daughters, Bridgett (Ryan) Boyd of Selah, Janea (Roger) Allred of Union Gap, and Becky (Chris) Denman of Kennewick; her grandchildren, Dane Boyd, Coby Boyd, Delia Allred, Ally Boyd & Zaylee Allred; her nephew, Aaron Taylor, great niece Brainna Julson, great great nephew, Gannon Julson, and many many more nieces and nephews; and her beloved puppy, Suzy-Q. All of these, she loved and touched deeply. Shelly was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Claudette.

Viewing will be Friday, November 8, 2019 from 3:00-7:00 pm at Shaw & Sons Funeral Home (201 N. 2nd St., Yakima, WA 98901). A family Graveside Service will take place at Terrace Heights Memorial Park in the near future. Brookside Funeral Home is caring for the family.
