Richard Allen Underwood, Jr.

Shaw & Sons Funeral Home

Richard “Dick” Allen Underwood Jr., 66, of Selah, WA passed away peacefully, Saturday, August 10, 2019.

Dick was born on July 29, 1953 in Neosho, Missouri to Richard Sr. and Loretta Underwood. He was their firstborn son and brought his parents much pride and joy.

Dick was the oldest of 6 children and took his big brother role very seriously. His number one concern was family, and he quickly became a provider for them at the young age of 9, working after school and then coming home to help care for his siblings.

One evening, Dick was cruising the Ave with his best friend Dave Mills, when he met the love of his life: Peggy Simard. Dick and Peggy married April 12, 1975. They had 3 beautiful children and eventually 6 grandchildren. Dick and Peggy were the proud owners of Selah Tire Service for 25 years.

Dick was an admired businessman who made every customer and employee feel like family.

Dick was an avid bowler and loved to fish. He loved to crack jokes and play cards. He had a passion for the beach and karaoke. Most of all though, he just loved to hang out with his friends and family.

In 2007, Dick suffered a TBI. This was the beginning of Dick’s problems with his brain. After fighting to get better, Dick moved to Garibaldi, OR where he had some very happy and very hard times. Dick eventually had a stroke on July 15, 2016, which landed him back in Selah, WA.

Dick moved in with his daughter, Lindsey Underwood-Mattox, and her family, where he stayed for the next 2.5 years. Lindsey was bound and determined to give him the love and care he deserved. With the help of Avery, Aliyah and Jade, Lindsey managed to give Dick the best life possible.

Dick spent the last few months at Prestige Care and Rehabilitations Parkside. The staff showed excellent care and compassion for him, and his children will be forever grateful. A special thank you to AnaMaria, Virginia, Annie, Mike, Nicole, Mara, Maggie, Alexis, Raven, Mamie, Suanne and Conchita, as well as all the other nurses and aides (there are too many of you to name) and Joyce in the kitchen, for the love and care you showed not only him, but our whole family!

Dick is preceded in death by his mother: Loretta, father: Richard, and brothers: Robert, Ron and baby Roger, along with his grandparents, many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Dick is lovingly survived by his children: Derek Underwood (Bridget), Brent Underwood (Heather), Lindsey Underwood and Avery Mattox. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Aliyah & Jade Underwood-Mattox, Ivy & Lily Underwood, Isaak & Genevieve Underwood and bonus grandchildren: Jaimes, Blayze & Jailee; along with his ex-wife Peggy Poole, and special sisters Diane Underwood (Abdul Maroof) and Lori Russell (John), and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

We greatly appreciate everyone who visited, who prayed, and who loved Dick, especially Lindsey’s friends: Brittany Choquette, Brittany Nelson, Sara Scully, Brandi Cole, Becca Van Guse, Mel Folkner and Lauren Adams, who all helped care for Dick and supported Lindsey the past few years.

Thank you to Jim Weaver, Bob Swanson, Ken Ford and Dan Dallman for the friendship you continued to show Dick until the end. Last but not least, an extremely heartfelt thank you to Dave Mills. You were a wonderful friend to Dick, his best friend, and we couldn’t have gotten through the last few years without you.

Memorial services will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Selah, WA, Monday, August 19, 2019 at 11 am.
