On Friday, July 5, 2019, USMC Cpl. Ricardo (Tobor Chico) Melendez Guerrero Sr. passed away at age 86, surrounded by family. Born April 11, 1933, to Apolinar and Prudencia (Melendez Carmona) Guerrero in Crystal City, TX, his family moved to Toppenish, WA where he met and married Francisca Vasquez in June 1955. Better known as “Richard,” he was a decorated Marine, a combat veteran of the Korean War. In the early 1960s Richard moved his family to Renton, WA and spent most of his professional career working for Boeing. Richard was brilliant when it came to mechanics and electronics. He was particularly fascinated with odds and ends and was constantly tinkering with electronic gadgets. In his later years he also developed a strong interest in medicine, avidly studying medical books in addition to his other hobbies. He had a natural love for learning and could provide a wealth of information about all of his interests. He was a bit of a recluse, but he always enjoyed sharing countless memories with his favorite granddaughter, Frannie.
Preceded in death by his brother, Nico Gamez, father Apolinar, and mother Prudencia, he is survived by his ex-wife, Fran (Vasquez) Guerrero of Tacoma, and his children: Richard Jr., (Sandra Gonzales) of Yakima, Paul, Abel, and Debbie Guerrero of Tacoma, and Irma (Shawn) Kirk of Bullard, TX, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Colonial Funeral Home in Toppenish on Monday, July 15. Viewing will be 9:00-11:00 AM, funeral services beginning at 11:00 AM. The burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
