Mary Angel Cerna

Our beautiful Mother Mary Angel Cerna passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by all of her loved ones on July 12, 2019. Mom was born on February 3, 1933 in Lyons, Kansas to Lawrence and Katy Barrientos. At the age of 16 she married the love of her life, Thomas Cerna Jr. After 49 years of marriage, Thomas passed away in 1998. Together they had 6 beautiful children, 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Soon after Mom was born, the family settled in Toppenish. Growing up, Mom loved riding her bike, climbing trees, playing sports, and being outdoors with her cousins. She and Thomas were married on March 12, 1949. With the door always open to family and friends, Mom kept a tidy home and cooked delicious meals for everyone. She enjoyed bowling and was part of a league with her father, Grandpa Lawrence. She loved shopping, especially for shoes and purses. She never left the house without her hair combed, clothes ironed, and her favorite lipstick.

Mom had a deep love of playing cards and her competitive spirit won many a card game. Playing cards has become a family tradition that we have all learned from her and will pass on for generations to come. She was an avid reader who enjoyed all kinds of books. She kept up on current events and enjoyed learning about history and geography. She also loved watching musicals, soap operas, Westerns and sports. She was a huge Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks fan. She loved watching her children and grandchildren play sports. She traveled all over the state following the family’s sporting events. She especially loved Toppenish wrestling. She proudly watched her sons and grandsons wrestle and coach championship teams.

Mom loved her family. She became a mother at a very young age, and did a wonderful job raising all of us. Her family was her greatest accomplishment in life and she was always so proud of all of us. Her room was filled with pictures of our family, cards, and articles about the family’s achievements. When watching her giggle and play with her grandchildren, you could see her beautiful smile with deep dimples. It would bring us all joy. She truly is “Our Angel” and we will forever miss her. We love you Mom, Grandma!

Mary was preceded in death by her father Lawrence, mother Katy, sister Rachel, brother Joe, husband Thomas and son John Manuel Cerna.
