Larry Lee Johnston, Sr.

Brookside Funeral Home & Crematory

Larry Lee Johnston, Sr. was born on September 26, 1944 in Yakima, Washington to Jerry Wayne Johnston Sr. and Edna Orlene Johnston.

He graduated from East Valley High School in 1962. He played baseball, basketball, and football during those years and formed lifelong friendships with his teammates.

Larry went to work at Boise Cascade in the 1960’s and remained there until it closed. He stayed on at the mill when Yakima Resources took it over. When it closed, he went through a retraining program at YVC, where he took the automotive class. Upon completion of the training, he was hired by the college to work in the automotive program as tool room attendant until retiring.

Larry loved tearing down, rebuilding, and riding motorcycles. He also enjoyed fishing for silvers at Rimrock Lake where he owned a cabin for 20 years. But most of all, he loved his numerous grandchildren. For several years he was foster father to girls who were relinquishing their babies for adoption and to infants being placed for adoption. There wasn’t a colicky baby that could not be soothed to sleep on his chest.

Three churches and their shepherds have meant a lot to Larry over the past many years: Terrace Heights Presbyterian (John Wilson), where he accepted Christ as his savior in 1979, Gateway Fellowship (Ron and Sandi Thomasson) where he grew in the Lord, and currently Spirit Alive Wesleyan (Jeff and Lurlene Allen), where he continued his spiritual journey.

Larry is survived by his wife, Carol, two daughters, Kari Page (Newell) of East End AR, and Dawn Glandon of Tumwater, WA, and four sons, Larry Jr. (Polly), Fort Smith, AR, Jay (Keisha), Calhoun, GA, Ron (Molly), Yakima, WA and Jeff, (Nicole), Yakima, WA. He also leaves behind 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at Brookside Funeral Home (500) W. Prospect Place, Moxee, WA), December 20, 2019 from 3:00-8:00 PM.
