Shaw & Sons Funeral Home

Deborah (“Deb,” “Debbie”) Marie Charcas went to be with her Lord on Monday, January 6, 2020. She passed away with her children by her side. Debbie was 68 years old.

Born January 2, 1952 in Hamilton County, Indiana, Debbie was the first of four children to Rev. James (Jim) W. Tharp and Maxine Marie Tharp. She is survived by her father, siblings, J. Steve Tharp, Priscilla Larsen, and Timothy Tharp, and by her three sons, David L. Charcas, Gregg J. Charcas, and Mark A. Charcas.

Debbie graduated from Pasadena High School in 1970, and she achieved her A.A. degree in Business at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. While in a Spanish class at the university, she met her husband-to-be, LeRoy J. Charcas, and they married August 9, 1974. They were married for 45 years.

Debbie loved music all her life. For a few decades, she spent much of her time teaching piano lessons in her home to children and some adults, hosting annual piano recitals each spring.

Debbie held a strong faith in her Lord Jesus Christ, and she expressed her faith regularly through singing in choirs at Selah United Methodist Church, Selah Church of the Nazarene, and First Baptist Church of Yakima, among others.

Debbie loved her husband and three sons dearly. She volunteered at her children’s schools as chaperone on school field trips, baked cookies and cupcakes for bake sales, played piano in school music classes, and hosted birthday parties for her sons and their friends at each of their childhood birthdays.

Debbie will be remembered for creating a happy, loving, and welcoming home for her family and all who entered into it. Her joy and kindness will be cherished by all who knew her.

A Memorial Service for Debbie and her late husband, LeRoy, will be held at Selah United Methodist Church, 1061 Selah Loop Rd., Selah, WA on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Debbie had requested donations be made to fund cancer research or Virginia Mason Cottage in the Meadow in Yakima, or to another charity of one’s choice in Debbie’s name in c/o Shaw & Sons Funeral Home, 201 N. 2nd St., Yakima, WA 98901, who is caring for the family.
