NALLEY, Carl Eugene “Gene” age 80, of Selah, WA passed away early Sunday, July 2, 2017 in the presence of loved ones. He was in the comfort of his home, where he resided for nearly 20 years. He fought a brave battle with reoccurring Leukemia. Born on February 2, 1937 in a log home in Bradleyville, MO, son of Ambrose A Nalley and Farley J Nalley (Martin), he was the 5th of six boys. The family moved from Missouri to Tieton in 1946 and to Selah in 1948. Gene graduated from Selah High School in 1954, was drafted into the US Army in 1959, where he specialized in Communications. He served 13 months in the Korean Occupation, and in 1961 was stationed in Fort Lewis, WA. He served 4 months additional active duty due to the Berlin Wall Crisis.
Gene worked for Larson Fruit in Selah and Boeing Company in Renton, WA. When he returned to Yakima, he worked as a blacksmith/machinist, then later the owner of White Front Shop, for a total of 47 years. He was well known for his superior craftsmanship. After retirement, Gene drove part-time for Bud Clary Toyota.
In his early years, Gene was an avid race car builder and driver. He competed throughout the NW area, CA, and Canada. His name was known in the racing scene, where he set, broke and maintained two national records. The Corvette was his favorite racing vehicle.
Later, the mountains became his favorite playground. He rode dirt bikes, motorcycles and enjoyed off-road jeeping. In 1975, he started snowmobiling and remained active until recent. Most winters he travelled with friends to Idaho for a week of amazing, non-stop playing in the snow.
In 2000, Gene became a member of Yakima County Sherriff’s Office Search and Rescue (SAR). He was recognized as Volunteer of the Year twice in Yakima County and once from the State of Washington for his outstanding service and performance in the field. Gene participated in hundreds of missions and training exercises. He served on the SAR Leadership Council for many years.
Gene was an outstanding volunteer, who gave hundreds of hours, year after year, working for our community. He dearly loved our Lord, Jesus and attended Harvest Community Church in Selah.
