Betty Westcott Holman, also known as Elizabeth Westcott Holman, peacefully passed away July 4, 2019 in Yakima, WA. Betty Jean Westcott was born in Benton County, Iowa, on March 22, 1927 to Jake Allison Westcott and Alma Enola Westcott. She was the 9th child of 15.
Betty grew up in Union, Iowa, attending Union Consolidated High School graduating in 1945. Following high school Betty moved to Des Moines, IA, and attended business school. Her first job was with Connecticut General Life Insurance Company, Iowa branch. In 1956, she transferred to St. Louis and began training for manager of their brokerage office. After about a year, Betty moved to their office on John Street, Manhattan, New York.
In 1974, she began employment with General Signal Corporation as Director of Employee Benefits. Betty met Charles Arthur Holman in 1976 and they were married at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, England, June 2, 1979. They renewed their vows at Westminster Abby in London in June 1984. Betty and Charles were married 31 years. While in New York she was an active golfer, skier, tennis player, and a member of the Long Island Yacht Club. She and Charles sailed their French-built Yawl and traveled the world. Betty attended teacher’s college and associated with Fordham University Middle Eastern Studies Program where she traveled to Egypt and developed a love of Ancient Egypt and its art and antiquities. She and Charles sponsored numerous symposiums on the subject through Fordham University.
Upon retirement, Betty and Charles moved to Sarasota, Florida, where she began her real estate career working for Michael Saunders & Company. She was very active in the community and at one time or another was an officer or member of the Florida West Coast Symphony, Sarasota Ballet of Florida, Sarasota County Arts Council, Caledonian Club and Foundation of Florida, Harbour Oaks II Home Owners Association, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Sarasota Memorial Senior Advisory Council, Long Boat Key Club, Sarasota Yacht Club, The Oaks Club, the Field Club, and the Sarasota Opera Association just to name a few.
In March 2018 Betty, at the age of 90, independently downsized her possessions, recruited a moving company to pack and transport her belongings, then traveled by air from Sarasota, Florida, to her final home in Yakima, Washington, to be near family. Betty had a special place in her heart for Charles’ artwork and brought several pieces with her that she could not bear to part with. She was tenacious and fiercely independent. She loved to walk. She had a deep love of flowers (orchids and roses). She missed her Florida home and friends immensely. She looked forward to and loved shopping and lunch dates with Merna. She will be missed by those who cared and loved her.
Betty was preceded in death by Charles Arthur Holman (2010), her parents, siblings, Mark Westcott, Alice Grimstad, Allison Westcott, Paul Westcott, Frank Westcott, Inez Westcott, Ralph Westcott, Elmer Westcott, and Ross Westcott.
Betty is survived by siblings, Pearl Grief, Anna Maas, Roland Westcott, Jack Westcott, and Merna Walker, special niece, Peggy Walker, and numerous nieces / nephews and great nieces / nephews, etc. Betty is also survived by special longtime friends, Richard and Wally Nelson (Kansas), Ethel and Harvey Lovelace (Florida), friends at Selby Garden, and many other friends from Sarasota, Florida and New York.
