South Wapato crash

Authorities investigate the scene of a crash involving a semi and a sports utility vehicle at the intersection of South Wapato and Progressive roads Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019.

WAPATO, Wash. — A 34-year-old woman died in a crash Thursday after a tractor-trailer driver failed to stop at the intersection of South Wapato and Progressive roads in Wapato, officials said.

Yakima County sheriff’s deputies said Caroline Pacheco, 34, was northbound about 8:18 a.m. in a red 2011 Chevrolet Traverse on South Wapato Road and had the right of way.

Deputies say a 44-year-old man driving a 2012 Volvo semitrailer was traveling west on Progressive Road and failed to stop at a stop sign, causing the crash.

The Chevrolet spun out and came to a rest on Progressive Road, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The trailer of the semi detached and went into a yard at the northwest corner of the intersection, the release said.

Pacheco’s 6-year-old son was in the back seat and was taken to Virginia Mason Memorial hospital in Yakima after complaining of abdominal pain, deputies said. He was treated for minor injuries and released, the release said.

Pacheco, who was wearing her seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi driver was examined by medics but did not complain of injuries, the release said.

No intoxicants were suspected, according to the release. The case is still under investigation by the sheriff’s office. Investigators say it’s unknown if charges will be filed.
