A mayoral and candidate forum of those seeking election to the Wapato City Council will take place Oct. 17 in Wapato.
The forum starts at 6 p.m. at the Filipino Community Hall, 211 W. Second St. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Sarah Augustine, director of the Dispute Resolution Center of Yakima and Kittitas counties, will facilitate.
The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters-Yakima County, the American Legion Post 133, Wapato Lions Club International, the Filipino American Community of Yakima Valley Inc., and the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition-Yakima County.
APIC-Yakima Chair Dori Peralta Baker said voter education is a crucial part of the democratic process, and organizers are hopeful for a large audience.
“A successful election is possible only if the voters register and come out to learn more about the candidates that are running,” she said. “So come to the forum and urge the citizens and candidates of Wapato to come as well.”
A Spanish interpreter will be on site. Voter registration forms also will be available on site for those not yet registered to vote, Baker said.
