YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima Basin Velo is teaming up with Yakima Kiwanis, Wells Fargo, VK Powell and Virginia Mason Memorial Hospital to get the Free Bikes 4 Kidz organization started in Yakima. Volunteers collect used bikes, get them up and running through standard maintenance and give them to local kids in need.

Volunteers are sought to help with maintenance on the donated bikes, according to a news release. Maintenance can be as simple as cleaning and putting in new tubes. Specific times and dates will be determined once a volunteer list has been created.

Those who would like to donate used bikes may do so at three bike drop-off events at 21 N. First Ave. in Yakima. They will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 14. Donations are tax-deductible.

Gather 25 bikes and volunteers will come and pick them up. Contact Leif at leifergeson@yvmh.org or 509-575-8116.

Free Bikes 4 Kidz is a non-profit organization geared toward helping all kids ride into a happier, healthier childhood by providing bikes to those most in need, notes its website, www.fb4k.org.
