An autopsy is planned for Thursday morning after a woman’s body was discovered Wednesday under a bridge on U.S. Highway 97 south of Toppenish.

The woman’s cause of death and identity remains under investigation, but there were no immediate indications of foul play, said Sgt. Mike Russell of the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.

Bridge inspectors with the state Department of Transportation reported finding the body in water under the bridge about 11 a.m. at the intersection of Marion Drain Road and U.S. 97, the sheriff’s office said.

The body may have been at the location — about 6 miles south of Toppenish, — for several weeks, Russell said.

Members of the sheriff’s office’s water rescue team recovered the body and turned it over to the county coroner’s office.
