Middle school students from Yakima County schools spent four days this week at the University of Washington's Early Engineering Institute. They were able to experiment with "gravity cars," which use weights and the power of gravity to move. Students received a gravity car kit, and then had to design and test parts to make their cars better.

The Early Engineering Institute is hosted by the UW's GEAR-UP program, which is part of a national effort to help students from low-income families prepare for and succeed in higher education.
