A man shot and killed himself after a several-hour standoff with law enforcement Sunday night in the unincorporated West Valley, according to a news release from the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.
At 5:20 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a suicidal 46-year-old man with a handgun in the 500 block of Songbird Road, the news release said. The man’s wife was able to get the gun away, at which point he left and went to the 1900 block of Barber Road.
The male confronted a resident at the Barber Road address with another handgun while the person was trying to talk him down and get him to surrender. During the exchange, the man discharged the firearm but no one was injured.
Deputies from the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office arrived and found the man in his vehicle, refusing to surrender. The male displayed the firearm several times and gestured as if he was intending to harm himself.
After a several-hour standoff with negotiators trying to talk the man into surrendering, he shot himself. Medical personnel provided assistance, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
No names have been released.
The Yakima Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Union Gap Police Department, Washington State Fish and Game, and Grandview Police Department also responded to help secure the scene, the release said.
