WAPATO, Wash. – A man was killed when he was hit by a freight train Thursday afternoon.
A BNSF Railway train crew spotted the man on the tracks east of Track and Donald Wapato roads at about 12:55 p.m. and used emergency brakes, said BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas. There were no injuries among the train crew, nor were any cars derailed in the emergency stop, he said.
The train was pulling empty grain cars from Kalama, Wash., to Minnesota at the time of the crash, Melonas said.
BNSF is working with Yakama Nation Tribal Police to investigate the crash, Melonas said.
It is not known what the man was doing on the tracks at the time, Melonas said.
The man’s identity is not being released pending notification of his family, said Chief Deputy Coroner Marshall Slight.
