GOLDENDALE — An unsafe pass attempt Saturday afternoon on U.S. Highway 97 north of Goldendale led to a head-on crash that sent two drivers to the hospital and left their respective vehicles totaled, the Washington State Patrol reported.
According to a WSP news release, the crash took place shortly after 1 p.m. near Milepost 31, about 18 miles north of Goldendale and 4 miles north of the Satus Pass summit.
A 20-year-old Snoqualmie man in a southbound 2003 Nissan 350Z attempted to pass several vehicles in a no-passing zone, the release said. Attempting to avoid the oncoming Nissan, a 26-year-old Pierce County man in a northbound 2004 Chevrolet pickup drove onto the right shoulder. However, the southbound Nissan veered to the left while overcorrecting, and the vehicles collided in the northbound shoulder.
Both men were taken to Klickitat Valley Health hospital in Goldendale. Their conditions were not available.
The release indicated that neither driver was impaired and that both were wearing seat belts. No decision had been made Saturday regarding criminal charges.
