YAKIMA, Wash. -- A 22-year-old Yakima man was booked into Yakima County jail on Sunday afternoon in connection with the death of a man who was shot in downtown Yakima earlier in the day, Yakima police reported.
John L. Barrett, 51, was shot late Sunday morning in the parking lot of The Depot, operated by Neighborhood Health Services, at 602 E. Yakima Ave. Police responded at 10:52 a.m. He was transported to Yakima Regional Hospital and Cardiac Center, where he was declared dead around 11:25 a.m., according to Yakima Police Department Sgt. Ryan Wisner.
The victim did not have any gang affiliation, police said.
Witnesses reported the gunman fled south to an apartment complex at the northwest corner of South Sixth and East Walnut streets. Police took the suspect, who lived in the building, into custody, Wisner said.
The suspect, who was unarmed when contacted by police, was questioned. Police were in the process of obtaining a warrant to search the suspect’s apartment.
He was booked into jail for second-degree murder, according to a news release prepared by Lt. Mike Pollard. This is the 11th homicide in Yakima this year, and the 17th homicide in Yakima County.
The incident also marks the third shooting in Yakima since the middle of last week.
On Friday, a 19-year-old man was shot repeatedly as he walked up to a car near the intersection of Pacific and Sixth streets. While seriously injured, he is expected to survive, police said.
Witnesses reported there did not appear to be any kind of confrontation prior to the shooting, according to police.
On Wednesday, a 21-year-old man was critically injured when he was shot in the head while raking leaves in his front yard in front of North Second Street home. He was taken to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center, and authorities say he is not expected to survive.
