SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — A 19-year-old Outlook man and a 17-year-old Mabton boy are in custody after Sunnyside police say the two struck a store employee in the head with a liquor bottle during a shoplifting attempt Tuesday.
Police were called to Safeway, 613 S. Sixth St., around 10:15 p.m. on a report of a robbery-assault. A 42-year-old store employee had confronted the suspects as they tried to leave the store after stealing alcohol, according to a police press release.
As the employee was dealing with one suspect, the other hit him over the head with a liquor bottle, the release said, and the pair fled.
The store employee was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital, where police said he needed “numerous staples” to close his head wound.
Police found the 19-year-old suspect hiding under a car a block away from the store, while the juvenile suspect was arrested during a traffic stop as he was leaving the area, the release said.
Both are being held on suspicion of robbery and assault, the release said. The juvenile has been booked into the Yakima County Juvenile Detention Center, while the other suspect was to be taken to the Yakima County jail, the release said.
