Mabton schools were locked down for several hours Wednesday afternoon because of an incident near school grounds.

Around 11:45 a.m. a man walked into the Blue Sky Market, 340 North St., stole 9mm ammunition, said he was going to kill someone, and then drove away in a gray Mercedes sedan, Yakima County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Casey Schilperoort said.

The Blue Sky Market is across the street from the Mabton School District offices and a block from the district's junior and senior high school and the close proximity is what prompted the lockdown, Schilperoort said.

A suspect was later detained in the incident, Shilperoort said.
