TOPPENISH — A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Toppenish on Saturday afternoon.
The shooting occurred sometime around 1:30 p.m. in the 400 block of North Chestnut Street, said Yakima County Sheriff’s Sgt. Judd Towell. Two Toppenish officers were involved in the incident, Towell said.
Authorities were not releasing the names of the man who was shot, nor the officers involved.
Toppenish Police Capt. Dave Johnson said the investigation was being handled through the Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit, with the sheriff’s office taking the lead. The investigations unit is a multi-agency team that provides an independent investigation of officer-involved shootings.
The most recent fatal officer-involved shooting in Yakima County before Saturday was Dec. 8, 2018, when Yakima police Officer Scott Groenwald shot Terrance Francis Ryan following a chase.
