Seneca Foods Corp. plans to shut down its plant in Sunnyside, according to a layoff notice sent to the state Employment Security Department earlier this week.
According to the notice, 300 employees are expected to be laid off after Oct. 5 due to a plant closure. The plant processes pears.
Company officials said Friday the closure would affect the Sunnyside plant. Seneca will continue to operate its plant in Yakima.
The federal Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification Act requires companies with at least 100 employees working an average of more than 20 hours a week to provide a layoff notice to affected owners and state employment agencies at least 60 days in advance.
The notice gives state agencies time to work with affected employees to help find new jobs.
Editor's note: This story has been updated. Company officials said Friday the closure would happen in Sunnyside, not Yakima.
