YAKIMA, Wash. -- A cafe, a brewery and a phone store are among the new businesses opening up in the Yakima Valley as of late.
• Journalists — or any fan of newspapers —should feel at home in the Newsroom, the new cafe at Westpark Shopping Center at North 40th and Summitview avenues.
The walls of the cafe are decorated with the front pages of newspapers from across the country, including the Yakima Herald-Republic’s post-Election Day issue from last fall.
The cafe, which offers gelato, desserts and coffee, opened quietly on Saturday. Spotted at Saturday’s opening was Yakima native Phillip Yin, who co-owns the new venture with Eric Geary. Yin previously worked as a television journalist, hence the Newsroom name and the homage to newspapers.
Hours for the Newsroom are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
•Wandering Hop Brewery has started its brewing operation. The Yakima brewery recently sold its first keg of its New England-style IPA to The Beer Shoppe at 302 W. Yakima Ave. in Yakima. Co-owner Nathan Cooper said his priority was to get the beer out to the public and that the beer should be available at the Sports Center, 214 E. Yakima Ave., Yakima and The Pub, 5110 Tieton Drive, Yakima, soon.
The taproom at the brewery at 508 N. 20th Ave. is still in the works. He didn’t have an exact opening date but said it could open sometime this year.
• The AT&T store at 2412 W. Nob Hill Blvd., located inside the Rainier Square development, opened Friday. The store is an authorized retailer that is operated by Spring Mobile, which owns and operates AT&T and Cricket mobile stores nationwide. Hours for the new store are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
