Dubai is a showstopper city that marvels every time. A frequent stopover city, many travelers deplane here for only a day or two as they head for farther-afield places like India, Africa and, for me most recently, the Maldives.

The Olympic Peninsula is a vast piece of our state; its beaches and lakes, great hikes and temperate rainforest are alluring. This special place is also a great family vacation locale, as you can easily squeeze in a ton of fun over a long weekend.

I’ve traveled all over the world and I am always eager to come back home to the Pacific Northwest and our abundance of beauty. Choosing just four of my favorite places is tricky, because in each direction we have exhilarating and interesting vacation spots.

As a sometimes-travel writer, I am sadly still shut out from most of the beloved world until it is safer to move about the Earth. My passport is ensconced in a safe place while I dream and plan for farther-afield adventures in 2022 (Maldives? Cost Rica?).

It’s safe to say that just as 2020 proved to be a year of very little travel, 2021 is starting out the very same. Fewer flights are being taken, cruises are docked and trains are pretty well out of the question.

Americans haven’t done much traveling since last March. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, vacation plans were scrapped, or never even made. Instead, we rediscovered green spaces closer to home, where we did our exploring and adventuring in fresh air.
