Dishing it Up

Who doesn’t enjoy a good happy hour? At the end of a long work day, to meet with a few friends at a favorite restaurant and try a special beer or cocktail can be just what you need to cap off the day. And when you can enjoy a few delicious small bites or sharable plates to go along with it, all the better. It means dinner is taken care of!

We are lucky to have a few places around town that have great happy hour fare. And now that includes Provisions in Terrace Heights as well. While they offered a few small items when they first opened, they have recently expanded their happy hour food offerings, and let me tell you, they have some super-tasty plates that are sure to satisfy just about everyone.

As you know, this is our annual beer themed issue of Yakima Magazine and we try hard to make every story about beer in some way, and this Dishing feature is no different. Lindsay Park, the executive chef at Provisions, has created several new happy hour plates that pair very well with beer, but she has also created two that include beer in the recipes. When I recently went to enjoy the new happy hour, these were the food pairings that Lindsay suggested to try with a cold pint of Top Cutter from Bale Breaker Brewing of Moxee. If you think this photo is a feast for the eyes, wait until you try them for yourself. Delicious!

The first was a large sharable plate they call Loaded Fries. They don’t look like a regular plate of French fries and they certainly don’t taste like them either. This was a plate of potato-cheese heaven. Thick cut potato slices were deep fried and then topped with a creamy and slightly spicy pepper-jack and Blue Moon beer cheese sauce, and then topped with crispy bacon and scallions.

The second happy hour item I tried was the new spicy salmon taco. These street tacos pack a tasty punch. The fresh salmon is spiced using Cholula hot sauce. They are a bit spicy, but not too hot. All the freshness of the salmon and the great crunch from the cabbage and cilantro-slaw come through. These are a perfect small bite to go with a cold hoppy beer. Order as many as you like. Each one is only two bucks.

Last, but certainly not least was the Manny’s beer-braised andouille sausage flat bread. Each triangle of crunchy flat bread comes with several slices of andouille sausage, laid on top of a garlic mustard and topped with braised onions. This is a very hearty appetizer. Each bite has deep and rich flavors that balance perfectly with the malt and bitters in beer as well.
