Whitewater rafting on the Tieton River

The Tieton River "flip flop," a unique whitewater experience, takes place annually via a dam release after the crop-growing season ends in September. It's a Class III or intermediate river, which means it has powerful currents, obstacles and large waves, but it's safe enough for first-time riders.

Many local rafting outfitters offer guided tours that cover courses ranging from 12 to 16 miles of river, off Highway 12 near Naches. Tour operators do coaching and safety drills, and provide wetsuits, protective gear, boats and guides. Prices range from about $70 to $100 per person.
