While the Yakima Valley avoided planned closures by Macy's and J.C. Penney, it will lose another retailer in the coming months.
Craft Warehouse will close its Yakima store.
The Yakima store is the only one in the region closing at this time. Camas-based Craft Warehouse has stores in Kennewick; Wenatchee; Vancouver; Salem, Ore., Medford, Ore.; Gresham, Ore. and Meridian, Idaho. A store in Beaverton, Ore. is in the works.
Steve Young, the store's general manager, who has worked at the Yakima store for 18 years, said poor sales were the likely reason for the closure. "I think our location was detrimental," he said of the store, at 1704 W. Nob Hill Blvd.
The store has about 26 employees - though it employed upwards of 40 or more during the busy holiday months. Young said nearly all of them want to stay in the area. He is talking to WorkSource Yakima about conducting seminars to help them through the transition.
A closing sale is underway. The final day of operation is April 14, but the store could close earlier if everything is sold, Young said.
