YAKIMA, Wash. — A 21-year-old Sunnyside man was convicted Wednesday of having sex with a 14-year-old girl he met while working at the Sunnyside Community Center.

David Rabanales-Perez faces a standard range of 12 to 14 months in prison following his guilty plea in Yakima County Superior Court to a charge of third-degree rape of a child. He remains in custody pending sentencing July 17.

According to court records, Rabanales-Perez met the girl at the community center last June, and they soon had several sexual encounters both at the facility and off-site.

Police said Rabanales-Perez denied having sex with the girl and claimed he had called her cellphone only about 10 times to leave messages regarding events at the center, where he worked as a receptionist and janitor.

However, a court-authorized search of the girl’s cellphone by investigators revealed more than 800 text messages from the defendant.
