ON Magazine

Friday, July 18-Saturday, July 19

* When it came to picking this summer's Warehouse Theatre Company musical production, director Brandon Lamb decided to focus strictly on the music.

His selection: The Rogers and Hammerstein revue "Some Enchanted Evening," which showcases songs from "South Pacific," "Oklahoma!" "The Sound of Music" and "The King and I," among others. The show opens at 7:30 tonight (a new curtain time) at the Warehouse Theatre in the Allied ArtsCenter, 5000 W. Lincoln Ave.

The cast features Louis Paolella, Michelle Eussen, Emily Stephenson, Alex Rumbolz and Julianne Goberville.

Performances continue at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Thursday-July 26, July 31-Aug. 2 and Aug. 7-9.

Tickets cost $17.50 for general admission and $15 for seniors and students through the Warehouse Theatre box office. Call 966-0951.

The box office is open 3-6 p.m. Mondays-Fridays and noon-6 p.m. Saturdays through the show's run.

Saturday, July 19-Sunday, July 20

* The annual Nile Valley Days is probably the only community celebration around that features contests as diverse as an egg toss and an ax throwing competition.

The family fun festivities run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Jim Sprick Community Park on Chinook Pass, State Route 410.

Activities and events include food and craft vendors, kids' games, live entertainment, Lions bingo, horseshoe tournaments, a Civil War encampment and demonstration in full uniform, and amateur wood events, including the spike drive, cross-cut saw, wood-splitting and, of course, an ax throw.

A $1 donation is suggested at the gate. For more information, go to www.nachesvalleychamber.com or call 653-2165.

Sunday, July 20

* Hey, McFly.

The Outdoor Summer Cinema Series starts Sunday with Marty and Doc Brown going "Back to the Future." Their time-traveling DeLorean takes off about 8:30 p.m. in Gilbert Park, 5000 W. Lincoln Ave.

The series continues with family-friendly films shown on Fridays in Randall Park, off South 48th Avenue, and on Sundays in Gilbert Park through Aug. 17.

Presented by Allied Arts of Yakima Valley, the midsummer movies are shown on a 16- by 20-foot inflatable screen with a theater-quality sound system. Audience members are encouraged to bring blankets or low-back chairs. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

Admission is a nonperishable food donation for the Northwest Harvest Food Bank. For more information and to see the schedule of movies, call 966-0930 or visit www.alliedartsyakima.org.

Wednesday, July 23-Saturday, July 26

* It's all about rock 'n' worship next week when Creation Fest returns to the Gorge Amphitheatre. This year's festival begins Wednesday and runs through July 26.

The lengthy lineup of Christian acts includes Switchfoot, Newsboys, Toby Mac, Superchic[k], Skillet and Pillar, among others.

Ticket prices vary and are available through www.creationfest.com or all Ticketmaster outlets, 453-7139, www.ticketmaster.com.

Friday, July 25-Sunday, July 27

* Next weekend marks Ellensburg's signature summertime event, Jazz in the Valley.

Moving into its 11th year, the festival runs July 25-27 in 10 intimate venues throughout Ellensburg's historic downtown.

On the bill are Alice Stuart & the Formerlys, Scott Cossu, the Greta Matassa Group, Ingrid Jensen and John Wikan, the Jeffrey Brooks Quintet, the Mel Brown B3 Quartet, the All Star Big Band directed by Chris Bruya and John Moawad, Jake Bergevin & The Javatown Swing Orchestra, Sidewalk Stompers and the Total Experience Gospel Choir, among others.

Other local businesses also participate in the festival with wine tastings, art auctions and children's activities.

An estimated 4,000 people jazz up their summers during this weekend, and to maintain the festival's small-town feel, tickets are now limited and are expected to sell out.

Festival passes cost $35 and are available through www.jazzinthevalley.com (through Tuesday) and the Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce at 888-925-2204 or 925-3137. Day and evening passes are also available.
