Prep roundup -- Grizzlies, Hounds advance

Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA -- Relying on their defenses to do most of the work, Sunnyside and Grandview took care of home-field business on Tuesday and advanced in the state boys soccer playoffs.

After a scoreless first half, Sunnyside pulled away for a 2-0 victory over Kamiakin in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs and extended its win streak to 10 matches.

In the 2A playoffs, Grandview outlasted West Valley of Spokane 1-0 in double overtime on Sammy Villa's goal in the 89th minute.

Both teams will remain at home for the quarterfinals. Grandview (15-3) will host Cheney (18-1) on at 5 p.m. Friday and Sunnyside (16-3) will host Kennedy (14-4) on Saturday.

CLASS 3A STATE

SUNNYSIDE 2, KAMIAKIN 0: At Sunnyside, Jordan Esqueda scored the first goal and assisted on the second as the Grizzlies advanced to the Class 3A state quarterfinals.

Joaquin Perez made nine saves for Sunnyside, which will host Kennedy on Saturday.

"We have had great communication between our keeper and the defenders," coach Juan Pineda said. "One mistake in the back, and you pay a price. But our team is very disciplined as far as how we regroup and move the ball out.

"It's the second time we've advanced this far. We just have to keep working hard, be humble and take them one match at a time."

Kennedy battled Eastmont to a scoreless tie on Tuesday and then won in a shootout, 7-6.

First half: No scoring.

Second half: 1, Sunnyside, Jordan Esqueda, 66:00; 2, Sunnyside, Brian Galvan (Esqueda), 72:00.

CLASS 2A STATE

GRANDVIEW 1, WEST VALLEY-SPOKANE 0 (2OT):
At Grandview, late in the second overtime, Cesar Barriga fired a shot that West Valley goalkeeper Nick Brown stopped for his
24th saves.

But the blocked shot glanced away from Brown and Villa was in the right place to nail the winner.

"I was so glad we won it there because I'd hate to face (Brown) in a shootout," said Grandview coach Anne Holden. "We had a ton of opportunities (24 shots) and I told the guys 'Just keep doing what you're doing.' We just had to keep the pressure on and sooner or later one would go in."

Cheney ousted Othello 3-0. In the upper half of the bracket, Quincy beat Medical Lake 5-1 and will host Port Townsend on Saturday.

First half: No scoring.

Second half: No scoring.

1st overtime: No scoring.

2nd overtime: 1, Grandview, Sammy Villa, 89:00.

Saves: Nick Brown (WV) 24, Teclo Perez (S) 5.
