Yakima Herald-Republic

BEND, Ore. -- Dan Whitaker and his Washington teammates staged a stunning rally Saturday to capture the PNGA Cup in a sudden-death playoff over two-time defending champion Oregon.

Whitaker won his singles match Saturday, 2 and 1 over British Columbia's Craig Doell, one of seven victories by the Washington team, which entered the final day of play in last place.

Washington players also halved two singles matches for eight points on the day, giving them 121/2 total, tying with Oregon, which won
51/2 points Saturday.

In the playoff, which featured four head-to-head pairings, two Washington golfers won their first hole, with the other two tying, giving Washington the victory.

For Washington, Bob Burton defeated Jeff Nielson, and Leslie Folsom beat Lara Tennant, while Whitaker tied Jim Dunlop, and Kent Brown tied Chris Maletis.

Whitaker, from Cle Elum, ended up accounting for three of Washington's 121/2 points, teaming with former Mariner pitcher Erik Hanson to win two matches Friday, before taking his singles match Saturday.

British Columbia finished third with 12 points, and Idaho, the first-day leader, was last with 11 in the event at the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at the Pronghorn Club.
