Two state champions took dramatic wrong turns in CWAC sub-district track and field meets on Friday, but Brett Blanshan flew straight ahead faster than ever.

The Selah junior clocked an automatically timed 10.36 seconds in the 100 meters at the North meet in Othello. That's the second-fastest time in state history, although a wind gauge was not in use.

"We had our hand times at 10.25 and 10.28 (which would round up to 10.3), and we said, 'Wow, can it be that fast?,'" said Selah coach Kelly Mattson. "Then we saw the auto time. It was a special race for Brett, he just flew out of the blocks."

Blanshan also won the 200 and anchored the first-place 4x100.

Meanwhile, at the South meet in Prosser, Cade Wandling false started in the 100 on his home track and was disqualified. He bounced back to win the 200 and 400 and anchor the top 4x100.

Ellensburg high jumper Matt Pfeifer, a 2A state champ last year like Wandling, failed to clear a height in the North meet.

All qualifiers will converge on Quincy next Friday for the CWAC district meet.

Ike's Newport sweeps sprints

RICHLAND -- Eisenhower's Jonathan Newport won the 100- and 200-meter races in Friday's Columbia Basin 4A district meet at Fran Rish Stadium.

Newport, who also placed second in the triple jump, clocked 11.30 and 22.69 in the sprints and led the Cadets to second place behind Walla Walla.

The regional meet next Friday and Saturday will also be held in Richland.
