The field, called Brooklyn's Boys of Summer Field, is at the intersection of East Washington Avenue and South 18th Street.

The Brooklyn Baseball Club of Yakima is leasing the 6.6 acres from Union Gap for the next eight years. The field will also be made available to the public.

TTC Construction of Yakima is donating most of the time, supplies and equipment to develop the empty field, said Rich Lindros, who manages the club. This includes building an irrigation system, excavating the land for dugouts and a backstop area, and hauling in topsoil and red rocks.

MSI Construction and Monson Fruit are also assisting in the renovation efforts, Lindros said.

The value of the project totals about $20,000, and the field will be available for use by Tuesday.

"I was just so blown away that this company (TTC Construction) was donating all of this time and energy and services," said Barb Petrea, public relations manager for the club. "It's the random acts of kindness that are really so important here. These people are giving to the whole community. That's what's so important to them."

This field is distinctive because it will have movable bases at 50, 70 and 90 feet, Petrea said -- meaning it can be used by players of all ages.

Mike Welch of TTC Construction said he wants the community to take pride in the new field.

He was spurred to action because his 9-year-old grandson is a bat boy for the club. His daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and A.J. Heckart, are a part of the family business and are equally devoted, Welch said.

"It's for the kids," he said. "We're just doing our part. ... It's the right thing to do."

The Brooklyn Baseball Club operates out of a 5,000-square-foot warehouse at 720 N. 16th Ave., which is equipped with batting cages, pitching machines and buckets of baseballs and bats. It has multiple teams, with membership costing $1,200 a year.

The club cooperates with other baseball and fastpitch teams and does not compete with Little League. Targeting youths from 8 to 14, the nonprofit club now boasts more than 100 members who come from as far away as the Tri-Cities, Prosser, Zillah and Ellensburg.

The new field in Union Gap will be made available to the public. Members of the Brooklyn Baseball Club of Yakima will also host daytime clinics throughout the summer -- including a free one for children of Union Gap. The dates and times of the clinics are pending.
