Freeze warning tonight; record lows possible

Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA -- A freeze warning is in effect for the Yakima and Kittitas valleys tonight as forecasters say overnight lows could approach record levels.

The National Weather Service is advising farmers to protect crops and homeowners to cover or bring inside potted plants.

The overnight low temperature for Yakima is forecast at 26 degrees.

The record for Oct. 11 in Yakima is 24 degrees, set in 1990. That same year, Sunnyside set a record low of 29 degrees.

Meteorologists said overnight low temperatures in the Yakima Valley will range from 25 to 30 degrees.

The freeze warning is in effect from 8 p.m. tonight to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Colder air is moving into Southeastern Washington today, an area stretching from Ellensburg to Walla Walla. Coupled with clear skies and light winds, temperatures are forecast to drop rapidly tonight and remain well below freezing for several hours.

Daytime high temperatures Saturday will be in the mid-60s, rising to a possible high of 71 degrees on Monday.
