MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK -- A new $22 million visitors center opens Friday at Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park.
It features new displays about the mountain's plants, animals, glaciers and volcanic activity. Visitors also may watch a 22-minute high-definition movie showing the park in all four seasons.
The new center took three years to build. The Tacoma News Tribune reports it incorporates a number of energy-saving features. The system that cools the auditorium uses cold water from the Paradise snowfield.
The new center won't have the 360-degree-view observation deck that was an attraction at the 42-year-old building. It will be demolished next spring and its concrete will be used as fill material for a new parking lot.
