Road work delays on I-90

SNOQUALMIE PASS -- Traffic will be slowed today and Thursday on Interstate 90 while crews remove trees along Lake Keechelus.

State Department of Transportation crews will be focusing on trees between Gold Creek and Rice Creek, and traffic will be slowed in both directions from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days. The trees are at risk of falling onto the highway.

DOT asks that drivers slow down and be alert as they approach the orange signs, cones and electronic message sign that will direct traffic through the work zone.

Go-cart prize in rodeo raffle

ELLENSBURG -- The Ellensburg Rodeo is selling raffle tickets for a go-cart, which will be awarded during the rodeo's "Tough Enough to Wear Pink" auction Sunday in the rodeo arena.

The motorized Pennzoil go-cart, donated by rodeo board member and Ken's Quick Lube owner Ken Peterson, is on display at State Farm, 400 N. Pearl St. Several other items will be auctioned off at the event, including a one-night stay at Cave B and handmade pink chaps.

Raffle tickets are $3 each, or $25 for a book of 10 tickets. They are available at the rodeo office, 609 N. Main St., Ranch & Home, 615 S. Main St., or at State Farm.

The third annual auction will begin
after the rodeo ends Sunday, around 12:45 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to wear pink that day to show their support for breast cancer awareness.

All proceeds benefit the local chapter of the American Cancer Society and the North Star Lodge in Yakima, which assists those with cancer treatment and recovery.

 

Mediation training available

YAKIMA -- The Dispute Resolution Center of Yakima and Kittitas counties will offer mediation training Oct. 24-26 and Nov. 7-9 at 404 N. Third St. in Yakima.

Trainees will receive 40 hours of instruction in skills required for serving as a neutral, third-party mediator. The cost is $450 for residents of Yakima and Kittitas counties and $500 for nonresidents.

A $100 refund applies to those who complete the certification and volunteer their time as a mediator for the Dispute Resolution Center. Partial scholarships are available.

Mediation is used as a way to resolve disputes, including small-claims court cases, parenting plans and issues, landlord-tenant issues and marriage dissolutions.

Mental health classes offered

YAKIMA -- The Yakima chapter of The National Alliance on Mental Illness will offer free classes called Family to Family beginning Sept. 17 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Family to Family is a 12-week course for mental health consumers, family members and others affected by mental illness.

Topics include current information about schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder (sometimes called manic depression), panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder and co-occurring brain disorders and addictive disorders. Family to Family has been taught by NAMI Yakima volunteers since 1998.
