A Yakima church is sponsoring a 48-hour rocking chair challenge to raise money for the children of two Yakima Valley men who were killed in the Iraq war.

Proceeds from the July 10-12 event, dubbed a rockathon, will go to the Dustin Sides Foundation, which sets the funds aside for the minor children of any local military members who die in the Iraq war.

New Hope Community Church of Yakima organized the event as part of its effort to become more involved in the community, church secretary Sandie Graves said.

The fundraiser is a way for local residents to recognize the efforts of the military.

Graves wants to see as many rockers as possible take part at Denny's restaurant in Union Gap, 2603 Rudkin Road. Several volunteers have offered to rock for the entire period, Graves said.

Participants can rock only for a few minutes if that's all the time they have; stand-alone donations will also be accepted. Graves can be called at 452-2673 for more information.

Fundraising proceeds are currently being set aside for the four children of Marine Sgt. Yadir Reynoso of Wapato and Army Staff Sgt. Kyle Eggers of Yakima. Both were killed in combat in 2004.

John Sides, the father of Marine Cpl. Dustin Sides of Yakima, established the foundation as a way of supporting the families and children of the casualties.

Cpl. Sides was the first of nine Iraq casualties with ties to the Yakima Valley who have been killed since the war started in 2003.

If future casualties have young children, the money will be redistributed, John Sides said.

Sides also organizes an annual car show in West Valley to raise money for the fund. Those proceeds are dedicated to supporting the families; the rest of the money goes to the children's fund.

"When they turn 18, they should know that the community cared enough to remember their dad," Sides said.
