BELLINGHAM -- On a wet and windy Tuesday that sent scores soaring, a handful of local golfers managed to tame the elements in state high school golf action.

Five boys broke 80, led by West Valley's Eric Gravbrot who shot 75, with Riverside Christian's Matt Crockett posting the best placing, sitting fourth in Class B boys, five shots off the lead heading into today's final round.

Crockett fired a 79 at Lake Padden Golf Course and was within striking distance of Highland Christian's Craig Crawford.

Gravbrot may have had the best day for a local, but a deep 3A field left him no better than tied for 11th. Sunnyside's Justin Bos was just three shots behind Gravbrot's group at 78 but was tied for 31st.

In 1A, Goldendale's Zach Wanderscheid shot 77 and was tied for seventh, and Highland's Minwoo Park shot 78 and was tied for 10th. Wanderscheid, who was 11th as a freshman last spring, is eight shots behind Chimacum's Chris Johnson, who matched the best round of the day, regardless of classification.

La Salle's girls have a shot at another top-three team finish with three golfers in the top 12.

CLASS 4A: Eisenhower's Christine Cook, who finished 13th at state last season, struggled in the wet conditions, but managed to make enough shots to finish at 90 and make the cut. She's in a tie for 27th.

"I was a little relieved to make the cut, considering how poorly I played," Cook said.

Davis' two entrants in the girls tournament weren't as fortunate, as Shannon Bedell and Caitlin Malone both missed the cut, shooting 98 and 100, respectively.

In the boys tournament, Ike's Brad Donahue shot a respectable 82, but missed the cut by four shots.

CLASS 3A: Only one of three West Valley girls advanced, with Jenna Boyle 14th after shooting an 87 as she seeks to improve on last season's 25th-place finish.

CLASS 2A: Despite a large contingent of golfers, only J.J. Wood of Selah, Kim Ellis of Ellensburg and Wendy Lopez of Wapato survived the cut. Wood was 35th in the boys meet after an 82. Ellis was tied for 13th in the girls at 92, with Lopez tied for 31st at 99.

Class 1A: Aside from Wanderscheid and Park, the only other local boy to advance was Zillah's Stephen Adams, who was 38th after an 85. Naches Valley's Jon Forgey, who was 26th last spring, was one of those missing the cut.

None of the four local girls made the cut.

Class B: Crockett hopes to build on his strong start to improve on his 11th-place finish from last season. His 79 was one stroke better than his opening-round score last season.

La Salle's Sam LaFramboise also advanced after a 91 that left him tied for 29th.

La Salle's girls had a solid day, led by Ariana McElrath, who was tied for fifth after shooting 94. She will be joined today by Melissa Taylor, 10th after a 101, and Julie Cozetto, 12th after a 104 as the Lightning seek another team trophy after placing third last season when McElrath was sixth and Cozetto 15th.

Also making the cut for the girls were Riverside Christian's Joy Attaway and Rebekah Reynolds.
